First Person

As stated before, the second novel of my published author career has been giving me some real guff. I like the contents. I think what I have written is good, but there’s been something off about the 31,000-ish words that hasn’t been working.

So, like any author, I turned to my agent partner and asked for another pair of eyes on what I’ve written. A real sneak of a peak, considering I’m nowhere near being finished with this thing (which I had to reiterate). Some constructive criticism was given, and now I have some more to think about with regards to the direction and structure of the book.

One of those things is: do I rewrite all of it in first person? It gives me a bit of an ick to do that, but I really can’t tell you why. Most romance novels are written in first person POV, so why do I feel such an aversion to giving my readers an even deeper insight to who Minerva Sterling is in this modern day timeline? Her thoughts, her feelings, her actions, this story is about her, after all.

Perhaps it’s not as popular in fic to write from an original character’s point of view, but I know I can do Minerva justice writing from her perspective. At least for some of the book. I’m introducing a few new characters that need backstory, one of whom is a much older woman, so she obviously can’t have her story told from Minerva’s point of view. It’s a tricky task, but one I’m willing to make work. And I’m eternally grateful I have a partner I can depend on to read my WIPs and give me the feedback I maybe don’t want, but absolutely need.
