Control What You Can

Things are beyond difficult right now. And a lot of it is out of my control, which I learned a long time ago to just accept and not get too worked up about. But it still sucks and it still makes me yearn for something I can control.

Like organizing. Organizing my home, organizing my thoughts, organizing things at my job. It all gives me a very satisfactory sense of accomplishment. Something I can control, even if it’s insignificant to the rest of the world. Self-care, for me, looks like organized drawers/shelves/closets.

That being said, I’ve been unhappy with some aspects of my office for quite some time. It felt cluttered/dark, despite the light green wall color and the pops of pink and lavender I’ve put throughout (surprise… pink and purple? who would’ve guessed!).

I had a short, very dark wooden bookcase in here until the other night, when I took it upon myself to move it into the living area. It lives next to our entertainment center, now, filled with games and a few “coffee table” books. I also have the boy cats’ litterbox in here, which is hidden in a thrifted hutch that hubs cut a hole in the side of. I moved that further from my desk/workspace to help alleviate the desperate need to clean my office every single time I walk in here to do… well, anything. I bought a replacement drawer unit for some art supplies (hubs and I enjoy painting on occasion) that will live next to my desk when it arrives, replacing the broken one that currently lives there. And lastly, the big, clunky bookcase built by my FIL that we’ve had since Mr. Eliza and I met. Sturdy enough to make it through four moves, but just doesn’t fit the overall aesthetic of the office. After my new drawer unit is set up, I’m spending half-a-week’s pay on a few tall and narrow IKEA bookcases to replace the singular, clunky one.

So, that’s what I’m up to outside of work and writing. Organizing my house/office. And soon, probably organizing with other humans to take back our rights.

All in due time.
